Description

The 216-acre island was once the home of William K. Vanderbilt and more recently connected to celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey. The Vanderbilt mansion is used as the island's clubhouse.

The upcoming project will include a lagoon pool surrounded by cabanas, fountains, a waterfall, valet parking and concierge services.

The Nichols Consortium also has been retained to prepare a master plan for the whole island, which is separated from Miami Beach by Government Cut, the channel that leads to the Port of Miami. The plan envisions a spa, hotel renovations, a new beach club and improved restaurants.

Fisher Island has no bridge connecting it with Miami Beach or the mainland, but has a ferry service that provides transportation. It has two-deep water marinas with a total of 131 slips, 18 tennis course, a nine-hold P.B. Dye golf course, eight restaurants, a 62-room hotel, a retail center, a polo field and a day school, according to its Web site.

The exclusive island has among the highest prices in South Florida. A Web site listing shows a 774-square foot condo priced at $1.25 million; a 1,500-square foot, two-bedroom, two-bath unit for $2.55 million; three-bedroom units for more than $2.85 million and several five-bedroom condos selling from $8 million to $10 million.

The island was created by a dredging project in the early 1900s and is named after Carl Fisher, who was one of Miami Beach's original developers.
